I’ll Drink to That

“Where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them.” – Jesus (Matthew 18:20)

With the coronavirus shutting down churches and travel, I thought I was going to spend Easter home alone for the first time this year. Instead, I had church with people separated from their families in the hospital, dying patients in a locked-down facility, and homeless people on the streets.

After waking up and responding to three pages from the hospital, I drove through a Starbucks to claim my free coffee for frontline healthcare workers. A homeless man named Joseph was at the end of the drive thru. I gave him money and wished him a happy Easter.

When he thanked me and said, “God bless you,” I told him that I’m a chaplain and asked if he wanted communion. I was going to hand him one of my communion wafer and juice to-go cups out the window, but I pulled over instead. I told him that I hadn’t had Easter communion either, so we had it together.

Joseph wept the whole time as I recited Bible passages from The Last Supper and Jesus’s Words of love and forgiveness. We shared the elements together, I prayed for him and then he cried, “Thank you! I love you sister and I will never forget you.”

Then I spotted these three men and had another communion service. One of them said he used to be a minister as well. Then one of his kids died, his life fell apart and he lost his faith. I told him, “What better day to come back to God than Easter.” He agreed and we prayed together.

I ended my day with hospice patients in a facility on lockdown due to COVID-19 restrictions. It will be their last Easter on earth but they didn’t spend it alone. Neither did I.

  1. Thank you Adee! Our testimonies and stories can encourage, inspire and uplift others and thats why we are meant to share them. We become relatable and connect to people we may never had expected through sharing our words, and His. YOU are amazing! When you share, I am reminded how much of a difference just one person can make in someome elses life, here and eternally. I read your stories and I think of those lives youve shared about, I pray for them, and I am reminded there are people every where, including around me, that need the same you love you constantly share with others. Please continue to write, to share your stories, and to be led by God to touch so many lives. You ARE amazing!

  2. I love your stories, Adrienne. We all complain about things in our life and loose sight on how fortunate we really are. Please keep sharing your stories. I really enjoy reading them. πŸ™πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ™πŸ»
